The La Crescent boys basketball team kept its perfect record in tact last week with a pair of victories. The team beat Rushford-Peterson to win its own holiday tournament, then faced Ste-wartville, a team that entered the game also unbeaten.
Lancers 71, Rushford-Peterson 50. La Crescent had an easy time brushing aside the Trojans in the second game of its holiday tournament Dec. 30. The Lancers had R-P doubled up by halftime, 36-18, and outscored the Trojans 35-32 in the second to coast to the non-conference win.
Sophomore Calvin Wal-ler scored 11 of his team-high 18 points in the second half, and center James Lazarcik registered his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
La Crescent scoring: Calvin Waller 18, James Lazarcik 13, Colin Dingfelder 9, Brandon Verthein 8, Lucas Olson 6, Jordan Erdmann 5, Marshall Bauer 3, Ethan Ferrian 3, Tanner Ladsten 3, Ray Marx 2, Jon McDonough 2.
Lancers 73, Stewartville 67. In a re-match of last season’s Section 1AA title game, Stewartville visited La Crescent Jan. 3, and the result was much the same.
Again, Calvin Waller led the Lancers. He erupted for 30 points to lead La Crescent to the victory. Waller, who made three 3-pointers, hit four free throws in the final 20 seconds to help the Lancers hold off the Tigers in a matchup of unbeatens in the Hiawatha Valley League.
La Crescent led the entire game, and established an inside presence that produced a 37-24 halftime lead. Waller had 15 points in the first half, and 6-5 junior James Lazarcik had 13 of his 19.
"We made a concentrated effort to get the ball into James a little more than we have," head coach Erik Wuensch said of Lazarcik, who made seven of eight shots, grabbed eight rebounds and went 5-for-5 on free throws. "They came out in a zone, and we reversed the ball on them a few times, and that opened up James."
Waller was an inside-outside threat and hit 11 of 19 shots to go with four rebounds.
La Crescent scoring: Waller 30, Lazarcik 19, Verthein 18, Dingfelder 2, McDonough 2, Erdmann 1, Marx 1.
La Crescent traveled to Winona Cotter Tuesday night, and Friday, it steps out of conference again and visits West Salem for a 7:30 p.m. game.
